Baptized?

“Why shouldn’t I be baptized?”

What a great question.  It was the question addressed to Philip by the Ethiopian eunuch he’d just shared the Gospel with, as recorded in Acts 8.  “Why shouldn’t I be baptized?”

This is especially true when we take into account what Jesus says about Baptism in the Scriptures.  Some of His final words before ascending into heaven were, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).  At about the same time, He also told His Church that their job until He returned was to baptize and teach all nations (Matthew 28:18ff).  Through the apostles Peter and Paul, He assures us that Baptism is not some act of commitment we make towards God, but rather God’s gift of washing and renewal to us:

  • “Baptism…now saves you also” (1 Peter 3:20).
  • “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).
  • “Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word” (Ephesians 5:27).
  • “We were therefore buried with Him through Baptism into death…” (Romans 6:4, cf. also Colossians 2:9-12).

Because Jesus tells us to go and baptize all nations (Matthew 28), because Scripture plainly says that we are sinful already from the moment of conception (Psalm 51:5), and because Jesus assures us that there is no age too young for faith in Him (Luke 18:15-17), we also baptize infants and children, preferably as soon as possible after birth.

What a gift from our Father!  If you haven’t received this gift from your Savior, we encourage you to come to St. Mark and be baptized.

If you’re interested in Baptism for yourself or your children, or want to know more, Pastor Tomczak would be happy to sit down and talk to you about it.  You can contact him at 972-298-0891.
